Take Direct Debit payments with GoCardless

Connect GoCardless, ask customers to set up a Direct Debit, get paid automatically, and handle failed payments, chargebacks and refunds.

On this page· 7

GoCardless takes payments straight from your customers' bank accounts by Direct Debit: Bacs (GBP), SEPA (EUR), ACH (USD), BECS (AUD, NZD), PAD (CAD), Autogiro (SEK) and Betalingsservice (DKK).

Connect#

  1. Go to Integrations → Payment processors → GoCardless → Connect.
  2. New to GoCardless? Choose Create a GoCardless account. Have one? Choose Sign in to GoCardless.
  3. GoCardless checks your business before you can take payments. Until then the card says so; choose Finish with GoCardless to send what they need.

Ask customers to set up a Direct Debit#

  • One customer: open their record, Invoices tab, Direct Debit, then Ask by email or Get a link.
  • Many at once: on the GoCardless card, Ask customers to set one up, tick them, then email them or make links.
  • Anyone: Manage Direct Debits → Account → Make my link. Put it on your website or in emails. Direct Debits set up through it are matched to the customer with the same email.
  • Not set up yet? Use Remind on their record. Cancel request withdraws it.
  • Change the email's words under Manage Direct Debits → Email. {name} and {business} are filled in for you.

Get paid#

  • Customers can pay any invoice by Direct Debit from its pay page.
  • A customer with a Direct Debit has their retainer invoices collected automatically.
  • Payments take a few working days. The invoice shows Payment processing until the money arrives, and it is marked paid when GoCardless confirms it. You can cancel a payment from the invoice until GoCardless sends it to the bank.

When something goes wrong#

  • A failed payment: the invoice shows why. Choose Try again (the Direct Debit must still be active) or ask the customer to pay another way. You are notified.
  • Money taken back (a chargeback): the payment comes off the invoice, which is owed again. You are notified.
  • A Direct Debit that is cancelled, fails or expires: the customer's record shows it, and you are notified. Ask them to set up a new one.
  • Refunds: on the invoice, Credit note → Refund to the original payment. The credit note shows where the refund is. A refund the bank returns is voided, and you are notified.

Direct Debits you already had#

Manage Direct Debits → Direct Debits → Bring in Direct Debits from GoCardless. Each is matched to the customer with the same email. Match the rest by hand, make a new customer from one, or unmatch one at any time.

Disconnect#

Use Disconnect on the GoCardless card. GoCardless is told at once. If you disconnect from GoCardless's side instead, the CRM switches GoCardless off and tells you.

Questions#

Do customers need a GoCardless account? No. They enter their bank details once on GoCardless's secure page.

Are customers told before a payment? Yes, GoCardless tells them before each payment.
